Abstract

THE EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES OF THE MISSIONARIES AND THE MINORITIES IN AMASYA AND OTHER DISTRICTS OF SIVAS PROVINCE AND SOME DETERMINATIONS ABOUT THE ATTITUDE OF OTTOMAN ADMINISRATION TOWARDS THEM
The Ottoman Empire, governed the minorities under its dominance, by a system of nations based on their religions and branches/churches. The minorities, having had the right to live freely, with no prejudice to their religions, languages, customs and traditions, had also had the right to found and manage their own educational institutes. Beginning from the 19th century, when the Ottoman Empire started declining, being influenced by the French Revolution, the minorities began developing negative attitudes towards the Empire, where they live. Another matter that threatened the Empire was the western states endeavouring to patronise the minorities on the Empire’s territories through missionary activities, to achieve their goals on the Empire’s territories. In this respect, they founded various healthcare, relief and educational institutes, and aimed to attract the minorities. Number of schools founded by the foreigners and minorities had increased during late 19th century and early 20th century, and activities in those schools extended beyond education and turned into destructive activities against the Empire. The Ottoman Empire did not remain silent against such activities threatening its integrity, the preventive policies had not worked, though. This research focuses on the analysis of the preventive policies by the Ottoman Empire, against the increase in the number of the schools founded by foreigners and the minorities, and the implementation of those policies within Amasya and other Districts (Sancak) of Sivas Province (Vilayet).
