Abstract

THE STATE OF FRENCH ON THE TERRITORY OF TURKEY: FROM TRADITIONAL TO GLOBALISM
Throughout the history of teaching foreign languages on Turkish territory, French held a primary place against other languages, such as German and English, for many centuries until the following years of the Second World War. The interest in France by the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire and influence of the French dates back to the 16thCentury; but especially in the 19thCentury French witnessed a very prosperous age. During the Turkish Republic, French which was traditional taught as a foreign language however, in the last quarter of the 20th Century witnessed a sudden decline and its previous role was henceforth replaced by English. Today, on the Turkish territory language teaching changed due to globalization in which political and economic interests, redefine international relations. The present study aims to investigate the position of French and the reasons of why it has lost its privileged place. Also, the influence of globalization on language policies adopted by France and Turkey will be discussed.
