Abstract

The human issue which gained its actuality in the Azerbaijani and Irish literature had created common qualities in the literature of both countries at the beginning of the twentieth century. One of the other reasons that created the similarity of the subject, content and idea between these literatures was the artistic reflection of the ideas of the national liberation. The ideas of national freedom in Mammadguluzadeh’s, Joyce’s, Yeats’ works were reflected with the identical symbols, and the same ideas were put forward in their works at that time. The mentioned problem was symbolically reflected in “My Mother's Book” by Mammadguluzadeh and “Cathleen Ni Houlihan” by Yeats. In both plays there are old women characters and these characters had been created as the symbols of the occupied motherland. The problem of the national liberation was declared through those images. The way to freedom was declared in the symbolic book of the mother in “My Mother’s Book” and in the mysterious words and songs of old woman in “Cathleen Ni Houlihan”. Not only in Mammadguluzadeh’s and Yeats’ creative works, but also in other Azerbaijani, Irish writers’ works the ideal of freedom is declared based on the same creative principles and thoughts. That was no coincidence, the literatures of Azerbaijani and Irish people were created under the influence of the social-political process at that time. All these issues will be elucidated in the article.
