Abstract

Death and separation are among the universal problems of humanity. The concept of temporality and mortality of life is particularly important among the teachings of religion and literature. Art is a creation about human and nature. Life, beauty, love and heroism are the main images of art. It is also possible to define art as an expression of emotions. However, the painful images such as separation and death have been among the subjects of art. In European painting, themes such as death, resurrection and the final judgment become widespread, especially after Christianity. As in medieval paintings, these themes are handled in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. There are many symbolic figures in the works of art that emphasize the image of death and mortality. Like art criticism methods that analyze figures in iconographic meanings, semiotics makes meaning and analyzes the indicators in the painting. Objects such as skulls, extinguished candles and hourglass in the pictures contain side meanings and deep meanings as well as the plain meanings that appear. The aim of this study is to examine the images of death and mortality in the European painting as indicators and to try to analyze semiotics by means of art work analysis. Semiotic art work analysis schemes will be used as a method.
