Abstract
Sosyoloji nedir sorusuna verilen kesin bir tanım bulunmamaktadır. Sosyolojinin bu tanımlanamazlığı sosyolojinin derinliği ve genişliğinden kaynaklanmaktadır. Sosyoloji üzerine yapılan her tanımlama, sosyolojinin genişliğini daraltır, derinliğini yüzeyselleştirir. Sosyolojiyi belli tanımlamalarla sınırlandırmak aslında sosyolojinin neliğini daha fazla belirsiz kılmaktadır. Makalenin amacı, sosyolojinin bilim çerçevesinin nasıl çizildiğini göstermek değil, bu sınırlar içerisinde neyi incelediğini ve bu incelenen noktanın yani sosyolojinin konusunun belli dönemlerle, kavramlarla sınırlandırılmaması gerektiğini göstermektir. Bu çerçevede çalışmanın amacı sosyolojinin neliği üzerine bir düşünsel çaba sergilemektir. Bu çalışmanın temel hareket noktası sosyolojinin kökü olan “socius” kavramıdır. Toplum, cemaat gibi kavramlar, sosyolojinin kendisi değil, socius’un bir formudur. Makalenin bir diğer amacı, sosyolojinin ne olduğunun yanı sıra ne olmadığı sorusuna da cevap bulma arayışıdır. Bu çerçevede sosyolojinin konusunun neden Aydınlanma toplumu olmadığı sorusuna cevap bulma arayışı vardır.

Abstract
There is no absolute definition for question which is what sociology is. There are definitions as much as thinkers. This indefinablaness of sociology is because of its deep and its extent. Every describe for sociology restricts extent of sociology and makes its deep superficial. To restrict sociology with certain describtions makes more ambiguous essence of sociology than it is. To describe sociology which is the result of moderd era by limiting with society or some else terms leads to lose sight of what sociology is. The purpose of essay is to try make intellectual effort. The basic foundation of this essay is “socius” terms which is root of sociology. Terms like society, community is form of socius, not sociology. Besides, “ideal type” term of Weber is used in this essay. Besides, another aim of essay try to found answer question which what sociology is not as well as what sociology is. In thıs concept, there is intelectual effort why topic of sociology is not related with enlightenment society. As it is said above, some describtions as sociolgy is result of the modern era or French Revolution is not show us esence of sociology. But uncertainness of esence of sociology is not change fact when sociology is born. The essence of sociology is socius. Socius means human togetherness. There are many forms of socius. Modern society, Tönnies’s community, Durkheim’s carve and Vico’s gens are different forms of socius. The aim of sociology which is reason of revolution and modernity is to build new society looks like community, carve and gens. But this similarity among differnet forms of socius does not means all of them are similar in terms of both concept and structural. Altgough there is similarity among them in terms of concept, there is subtantial discrepancy between society which is last form fo socius and the former forms of socius in terms of structural.
