Abstract
Türk dilinde gerçek anlamda Batılı romanı başlatan kişi olan Halit Ziya, edebiyatın birçok alanında eser vermiş, son derece üretken bir yazardır. Son derece sağlam bir teknik ve sanatkârâne bir üslupla kaleme aldığı eserleriyle edebiyat teorisine ve anlatı tekniğine hakimiyetini kanıtlayan Halit Ziya, bu yönüyle Türk romanını bir kademe ileriye taşımıştır. Roman ve hikâyelerinde modernist teknikleri ustalıkla kullanan Halit Ziya, bu çalışmada esas aldığımız Mai ve Siyah romanıyla hem devrine ışık tutan hem de teknik açıdan kendinden önceki eserleri aşan bir roman örneği ortaya koymuştur. Biz bu çalışmada tematik bir incelemeden ziyade romanın teknik yönüne odaklanacağız ve çalışmamızı romandaki sözün ve düşüncenin yani “söylem”in temsil ediliş biçimleriyle sınırlayacağız. Bu bağlamda öncelikle anlatıcı ile Ahmet Cemil’in söylemi arasındaki ilişkiye değineceğiz; daha sonra da romanda sözün ve düşüncenin (“söylem”in) hangi teknikler kullanılarak temsil edildiğine odaklanacağız.

Abstract
Halit Ziya who initiated Western novel precisely in Turkish language is a highly productive writer as giving works in many fields of literature. As proving his proficiency on literary theory and narrative technique with his works written with an extremely strong technique and an artistic style Halit Ziya has carried the Turkish novel one step forward in this respect. By skillfully using modernist techniques in his stories and novels, Halit Ziya not only sheds light on his period but also gives a novel example which technically goes beyond the previous ones with his novel entitled Mai ve Siyah which we examined in this article. In this study, we will focus on the technical side of the novel rather than a thematic review of this work, and we will limit our study to the forms of representation of speech and thought, namely “discourse” used in the novel. In this context, we will first refer to the relationship between narrator’s and Ahmet Cemil’s discourse, and then we will focus on the techniques used to represent speech and thought (“discourse”) in the novel.
