Abstract

Abstract

TRA1 is one of the 26 level-2 regions in Turkey and covers the provinces of Bayburt, Erzincan and Erzurum. Today, there is a population of 1 million 75 thousand people in the TRA1 level-2 region and this population corresponds to 1.3% of Turkey's population. In this study, the development of the population in the region and the change of demographic structure in the 2007-2020 period were examined. Despite the natural increase in the TRA1 level-2 region over a 13-year period, the population has decreased. Undoubtedly, the reason for this situation is that the net migration rate constantly takes negative values in the provinces of the region, especially in Erzurum, which is the most populated province. Between 2007 and 2020, the total fertility rate and crude birth rate decreased in the TRA1 region. For this reason, the share of the child population in the total population has decreased in the region. In the same period, the share of the working age population and the elderly population in the total population increased. The rate of child population in the region, which was 30.1% in 2007, decreased to 23.6% in 2020, while the rate of the working age population increased from 62.5% to 66.2%, and the rate of the elderly population increased from 7.4% to 10.1%. Depending on the change in the age composition of the population, the total dependency ratio of the population and the youth dependency ratio decreased in the TRA1 level-2 region over the 13-year period. In the same period, the elderly dependency ratio increased. In the TRA1 level-2 region, the total dependency ratio, which was 60% in 2007, decreased to 51% in 2020, in the same period, the youth dependency ratio decreased from 48% to 36%, and the elderly dependency ratio increased from 12% to 15%.The demographic structure in the TRA1 level-2 region differs according to the provinces. While Erzurum draws attention with its high child population rate and dependency rate, the provinces of Bayburt and Erzincan draw attention with their low child population and high proportion elderly population rates.
