Abstract

Abstract

There is a coherence, harmony, and agreement among the verses and chapters of the Qur'an, which were revealed over a period of twenty-three years on the occasion of different events and arranged independently of the order of revelation. While traces of the science of the Qur'an, based on this idea, can be found in some commentaries, there are also independent works that interpret the entire Qur'an using the concept of harmony and agreement. This study examines the commentary titled "Tabsir al-Rahman," written by the Indian scholar and Sufi Ali al-Mahaimi (d. 835/1432), which stands as an independent work in the field of Qur'anic relations. First, a brief overview of Mahaimi's life, works, and the formation of his Sufi identity is provided. Then, the commentary "Tabsir al-Rahman" is evaluated in terms of the general principles and methods of Qur'anic exegesis. While weak in terms of both narrative and rational interpretation, this commentary is distinguished by its symbolic interpretation, influenced by al-Mahaimi's Sufi identity. However, the systematic explanation of all verses, establishing connections between them, makes this work unique in its field.

In light of the verses we specifically selected, we attempted to determine the method and approach that al-Mahaimi followed in applying the concept of "Munasabat al-Qur'an" (Relationships of the Quran). Through these exemplary verses, we determined whether he established connections between surahs and how he ensured harmony within the surahs. The semantic link established between consecutive verses, without any neglect, and how it was established when transitioning to narrative verses, verses of judgement, and different topics, were examined under separate headings. Where appropriate, the semantic relationships he established were compared with the views of scholars who adhered to the principles of inter-verse relationships, such as Zamakshari (d. 538/1144), Razi (d. 606/1210), and Bikai (d. 885/1480). This study examines the contribution of the aforementioned work to the field of Munasabatu'l-Qur'an (relationships of the Qur'an), while also aiming to introduce this commentary, which has not been a central subject of academic research in our country.
