Abstract

Abstract

In the works Sabahattin Ali's Kuyucaklı Yusuf (Yusuf from Kuyucak) and Gerhart Hauptmann’s The Weavers (Die Weber), whether the people living in the society, especially in the small settlement areas, do fulfil their religious duties, or not; their views on religion, and clergymen; how they reflect topics on the education of religion, and so on; while reflecting how much and how they have influenced the context of the event-reality, how loyal or neutral they were to the truth, and for the necessity of literature, the fact that they are fictitious and how they affect the problems, are reflected in these works in a realistic and naturalistic manner. Turkish and German literature has used the religions of Turkish and German societies as a fiction material in these works which are the most beautiful examples of the realistic and naturalistic periods. Almost none of the characters in the works of both authors respect superstitious beliefs. The religion motif in both works is predominantly placed in such a way that it does not fall below other motifs in all sections. The beliefs and behaviours that conform to these and similar religious rules are aimed to be studied in the mentioned Works through the methods of Comparative Literature and Contextual Literature by examining the reflection form of this phenomenon in the Turkish-German society in the periods in which the works were written and the authors lived in, in a comparative way.
