Abstract

Gender which is historically, socially and culturally constructed, has undertaken the function of making individuals suitable for the social norms. Gender norms are highly effective on man and encompass their lives. In this way, it is aimed for men to acquire qualities suitable for the masculine norms. It is seen that, through gender rhetoric and practices, men are pressured and prevented from being themselves. In the stories of Murathan Mungan’s Cenk Öyküleri book, it is seen that discourse and practices of masculinity create a competitive environment among men, and the ceremonies of admission to manhood, traditions, customs and norms bring man against other men. In the analyzed stories, it is determined that the behaviors that show the characteristics such as power, strength and courage that gender identity necessitates for men bring along the problem of identity, loneliness, lack of communication, alienation and belonging.
