In the work, it is a historical document as it deals with the different aspects of the war. And at the same time, the sense of nation and homeland is very important for the first time in poetry. In particular, “Vatan Qasidesi” with 105 couplets is the first poem written about the homeland and the love of the homeland. In this respect, it is necessary to define Yûsuf Hâlis as “the first poet discussing the thought of homeland in poetry before Namık Kemal” and regarded as a monumental figure. Nevertheless, such an important poet and his work, unfortunately, were kept in the background and wasn’t valued as it deserved. On top of being a versatile poet, Yûsuf Hâlis was overshadowed by the celebrated poets like Namık Kemal and being a second-degree poet adversely affected his publicity. In this study, Information about the life and works of Yûsuf Hâlis Efendi is given and the work titled Şehnâme-i Osmânî is introduced.
