Abstract

Şemsettin Sami is one of the important names of Tanzimat period literature. Semsettin Sami who looks at the changes in the Ottoman society from a rational window, reflects his thoughts on the first novel of Turkish literature, Taaşşuk-ı Talat and Fıtnat. In this work, he first focuses on the individual solving the problems that he/she faces in the changing Ottoman society and making decisions about his/her life. In the context of marriage, the author expresses his thoughts about marriage at a young age, arranged marriage, equal status of married persons, patience in a marriage, marriage-style, separation of young people who love each other, and age differences among couples. In male-dominated society, while the writer is dealing with the situation of the woman, he expresses his thoughts about co-education, the problem that girls do not have schools to go, the value of education in the society, raising a child and using Arabic letters. Beside these, the writer of the novel states his opinions about nature, slavery, superstitions and fairy tales,
