Abstract

Ahmet Cevdet Pasha is one of the rare personalities of the Ottoman Empire which was trained in the last years, XIXth century, of the Ottoman Empire. He has many expertise as lawyer, historian, sociologist, language professor. He studied, read, and never bored of life. Until the end of his life, he is devoted to both religion and science, as well as the nation. He is a statesman who has served as minister of justice (five times), minister of education (three times), minister of foundations (twice), minister of internal affairs and once a minister of trade and agriculture. He has contributed to the laws of his time and to the majority of institutions established. He wrote “Mecelle”, a masterpiece in the field of Islamic law. Ahmet Cevdet Pasha is the owner of the 12-volume work named “Tarih-i Cevdet”, which extensively describes the history of the Ottoman Empire. His most important contribution to the Turkish language is that he wrote “Kavâ'id-i Osmâniyye”, which is regarded as the first grammar book of Turkey’s Turkish.
