Abstract

The aim of this study is to reveal the common use properties of the candle motif which has an important place in Turkish Islamic arts on gravestones and weavings. For this purpose, in various parts of Anatolia Turkish gravestones and weavings were examined and similar features were tried to be revealed. Similar features include the form and meaning of the candle motif. The study, which has been compiled from various sources on Turkish gravestones and weavings, is in the form of a literature review. In this study, the candle motif was defined and their usage in Turkish gravestones and weavings were explained, comparisons were made and the subject was concluded in this direction. As a result of the study, it was observed that the candle motif was found mostly in Seljuk period in grave stones and it was generally applied in prayer rugs. It was found that the Kandil motif has similar features in both elements and was formed according to the same meaning in terms of meaning load. The candle motif, which is usually applied as a hanging in form, symbolizes “divine light" in gravestones and prayer rugs.
