LADIES PRAYER HALL AND OTHER CUSTOMIZED SPACE NEED IN MOSQUE: A CASE STUDY OF MARMARA UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF THEOLOGY MOSQUE

Abstract

The place of worship of the Muslim community is called a mosque or a masjid. The areas and/or spaces in the mosques are shaped based on worship. Factors such as status, invitation and gender were effective in the classification of the mahfil’s, which is one of the main parts of the mosque. Today in Turkey, the area defined for women to pray in the mosque as a result of the limitation of certain places are called ladies prayer hall. But in some of the built mosques, it is seen that the worship area of the woman is not considered. Providing suitable physical conditions in religious places that allow women to worship in a collective is a necessity in today’s social life. In this study, Istanbul Marmara University Faculty of Theology Mosque one of today's mosques, was evaluated and analyzed in terms of its spatial organizations and qualifications. It is aimed that the findings obtained and the suggestions developed through the evaluations will create a source for sustainable and universal designs that embrace everyone regardless of gender in new designs. It is aimed to comprehend the importance of the places reserved for women in the mosques to be built, to achieve more functional and comfortable spaces and to constitute a resource for making necessary arrangements in this context.
